It gets the rap it deserves. It is getting better these days but in the 70s when I lived there - Bill Clinton was gov - it was pretty backwards. Civilization had passed it by. The Ozark mountain people were a rough lot. Nothing like the noble savage that is romanticized in literature. The noble savage doesn't exist. Arkansas was proof enough of that. I have lived here all my life and it's beautiful. I have traveled many states and believe me, the illiterate people are everywhere, the rednecks are everywhere. All people are unique in their own way. Arkansas has many great vacation spots. Check out Lake Ouachita in Hot Springs, Greers Ferry Lake, Blanchard Springs Caverns, float the Buffalo River or the Spring River. Go hiking in the Ozark Mountains, go camping in our beautiful parks. The town that I live in is small. You drive down the road and everyone waves. People here are friendly and helpful and welcome the 250,000 plus vacationers that wouldn't go anywhere else to spend their summer vacation. Our town has less than 1500 residents and on a beautiful lake! I am proud to be from Arkansas. I am proud I love my Jim Beam, my Harley, my tattoos, my biscuits & gravy, steak & taters, and a big cold watermelon is great too! We even wear shoes here!!!!!! lol (Well, sometimes!) AND I LUV MY SUTHERN' ACCENT! And, as I have heard reference to in a song by a fellow southerner, anyone who don't like us can kiss our southern redneck a^%! Thanks for the question and the good word you put in for us hillbillies! lol! Oh, and next time ya'll come this way, stop in and holler at us! I did the same thing being from California I only knew one "Arky" when I was working in Colorado as a logger. He was louder, crazier, and drunker than anyone else. He dressed funny and talked funny. He represented Arkansas for me. Several years later I was stationed at an Army post in Arkansas and found out that my stereo type was pretty far off.
